What Is Natural Makeup? Getting The Ultimate Wedding Glow

Natural and cruelty free makeup products review

Makeup is an amazing tool to help my clients feel beautiful and confident on their wedding day. My ethos is that makeup should complement and enhance rather than cover. Natural makeup resonates with me and the way I choose to work, and I’d love to share some of my favourite tips for embracing your inner glow. In this post, we define what natural makeup means to me and how I like to create a radiant look.

Why I love a natural approach when it comes to makeup

I will always champion embracing and learning to love the skin you're in. Modern-day Instagram filters and over-editing lead us to believe our natural selves don’t make the cut, giving us unrealistic expectations. When the truth is, no one has perfect, pore-free skin or completely symmetrical features. I believe it’s these “imperfections” that make us beautiful, human and unique. Above all, natural makeup helps us to embrace loving our own skin and reject unachievable levels of social media perfection.

What defines “natural” makeup?

The definition of “natural makeup” can differ for everyone. The way I choose to look at it, natural makeup means using products to highlight rather than mask. It means ditching heavier coverage foundations and contouring, and instead opting for healthy-looking skin, with a fresh glow. I add subtle definition around the eyes, a wash of colour to the lids and a stain to the cheeks and lips, creating an effortless look.

Tips for creating a natural makeup look

Natural makeup may seem ‘simple’, but it doesn’t necessarily mean easier or quicker. Everyone is different. Your skin, your style, and your needs are unique so each makeup needs to be adapted to fit and feel like you. Find below a few of my top tips and products that I love using on my brides:

1. Good skin prep

Always make sure you start with a clean canvas. Cleanse your face and then layer hydrating products to lock in moisture and promote glow. For my bridal clients, I use the Olixa Centella Asiatica face mask makeup to soothe and revitalize the skin. Typically I follow this with a hydrating serum to plump and give the skin a natural dewy look, my favourite is NINI Organics Crimson Beauty serum (use code ‘NSStudio’ to get 15% off your order).

2. Opt for a sheer base

Use a lightweight base to even the skin tone, followed by buffing in concealer to areas where you may want more coverage. For those who aren’t used to wearing makeup, this feels fresh and not too heavy. I also find when covering breakouts this method helps to avoid the makeup clogging and looking cakey. I love using Chantecaille Future Skin (use code ‘LFTFNAOMISS’ for up to 20% off selected products).

3. Choose cream products

Put down the powder products and choose cream or liquid alternatives. The consistency of cream makeup blends seamlessly into the skin, and the payoff is incredibly natural compared to powder blushes and highlights. Cream products are also versatile and you can use the same product for multiple areas of the face. For example, a cream bronzer can be used on the cheeks, but also as a wash of colour across the eyes, likewise, a cream blush can be added as a stain on the lips. This helps to tie the whole makeup look together. I love ILLIA multi-sticks to create a flush on the cheeks.

4. Finish with a setting spray

Healthy skin glows, so rather than finishing off a makeup look with powder and mattifying the look completely. I prefer blotting papers to remove excess oil from the face. I finish with a hydrating mist or setting spray to lock in hydration and set the look. This COOLA makeup setting spray is my go-to at the moment!
