It's no secret that one of my favourite 'tools' to use during facials is my Celluma LED. This high-tech piece of equipment gives great results, unlike any other tool. In my latest post, I take a deep dive into the world of LED and its benefits, plus answer some of my most asked questions when it comes to this amazing facial treatment.

What is LED light therapy?

LED light therapy uses specific wavelengths of coloured light to penetrate the skin at different depths. This promotes a natural photo biochemical reaction (like photosynthesis in plants). The energy absorbed from the wavelengths of light helps improve cellular performance and can help tackle skin concerns and improve the overall condition of your skin.

The benefits of regular LED treatment

Results from LED are cumulative and you will see the best results from regular sessions. Each colour of LED has a different function with a multitude of benefits:

Blue light - The perfect non-invasive option for acne-prone skin, a course of weekly treatments ensures you get the best results. Not only does it help to reduce oil production but it also works deep below the skin's surface to kill acne bacteria that causes breakouts. It, therefore, helps to restore the overall appearance of your skin tone and texture while decreasing inflammation.

Red light - Is great for instant and long-term effects. It's the 'red carpet' or 'pre-wedding' treatment of choice, as it helps to reduce inflammation and boost cell hydration, making the skin appear smoother and plumper. Longer term it encourages skin cell turnover which boosts the production of collagen and the elasticity of your skin. With red light therapy, you’ll notice a reduction in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and scaring/pigmentation. It can also be very beneficial for rosacea too by helping to reduce redness, inflammation and potential discomfort.

What to expect from an LED treatment

Whether you are having LED light therapy within a treatment, as an 'add on' or a stand-alone facial we firstly cleanse your skin to ensure it is clean and free from products. A pair of protective goggles will be placed over your eyes and then the LED lamp sits over your face like a hood, you may find it feels slightly warm but it's totally pain-free! While the LED works its magic, you will receive a relaxing foot massage.

LED light therapy FAQs

Is LED light the same as UV light?

No, LED is different from UV. Celluma utilises blue, red and near-infrared light-emitting diodes only. It does not burn your skin or have the same harmful rays.

Can anyone have LED light therapy?

There are certain contraindications that make you unable to receive LED light therapy. This includes pregnancy, breastfeeding and those with cancer and eye conditions. For the full list of contraindications check my FAQ page.

Are there any side effects?

LED light therapy is considered to be extremely low risk. The technology was originally developed for NASA and has since been approved by the FDA. One of the best parts about LED light therapy is it is painless and non-invasive so no downtime is required after the treatment.
